Playing a hair designer

Fun Balloon Hairdressing Activity

When my child was little, this was one of his favorite activities. Sure, I could have just let him practice on my own hair — but let’s be honest, no mom wants to walk around with a ruined haircut.

So instead, I came up with the perfect solution: a DIY doll that kids can cut, comb, style, and completely mess up — without anyone having to be a victim. It’s fun, safe, and gives kids the freedom to experiment with as many hairstyles as their imagination allows.

It may take some time to prepare, but kids will absolutely love it.

Materials you’ll need:

  * A balloon
  * Wooden chopstick
  * tape
  * A box or Styrofoam block (to hold the stick)
  * Thick yarn (for the hair)
  * Comb, scissors, hair ties, and hair clips

Instructions:
  1. Blow up a balloon.
    2. Tape the balloon securely to a wooden chopstick.
    3. Draw a face on the balloon.
    4. Place the chopstick into a box or Styrofoam block so it stands upright.
    5. Glue or tape strands of thick yarn onto the balloon to create hair. (The longer the yarn, the more hairstyle options kids can cut, style, and play with.)
    6. Hand the child a comb, scissors, hair ties, and clips, and let them enjoy styling their “balloon friend’s” hair.

    Now all you need to do is watch the kids play and share in their happiness.
